Since 2006, Mathematics together with Applied Mathematics and Computer Science form the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

The Mathematics Division is now housed in the newly renovated Mathematical Sciences and Industrial Psychology building, and has 19 members of academic staff, as well as several graduate students on honours, masters and doctoral level.

The research activities of the Mathematics Division span a range of subject areas, including Combinatorics, Lattice Theory, Algebraic Number Theory, Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry, Algebra, Topology and Category Theory, Functional Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Wavelets and Subdivision Analysis, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Biology.

Several seminar groups are active with weekly meetings, as well as regular colloquium talks by visitors to the Department.

There is also strong interaction with the African Institute for the Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg, which attracts international scientists, and creates the opportunity for joint activities.
